If I were a painter....

Listening to my iTunes "jazz vocals genius mix" while I try to think of what to blog to all of you lovelies about and Norah Jones' "Painter Song" came on.  This song has always made me happy and years ago inspired a little poem I wrote and it make me think...

Its funny how things start to come together as you get older. I've always thought that my interests and desires were a little all over the place. I love poetry. I love writing. I love when people read and react to what I have written. I love traveling. I love spanish. I love makeup and beauty and skincare. These things never meshed in my head! It's like how I love this lamp...

and this rug...

and this bedspread....
...but don't know how to bring them all together! I have always felt a little eclectic but not in a good way,  in more of a schizophrenic way like I've never really known which of all of these things I really am.  The older I get the less these things feel like separate interests, the more they seem to melt into cohesion and the more comfortable I become in my own skin. Maybe I'm just a late bloomer...who knows!

"If I were a painter - I would paint my reverie..."

Maybe thats what I'm doing here...painting my reverie... I want to create. I want to inspire. I want to transform people with my brushes and with my words. I hope that I've found a way to do both with this blog! The next time I post I promise it will be with a tip or trick or tutorial but for now I just wanted to share this thought with you and I'll try to take my own advice. Don't worry if it doesn't make sense now. Don't let go of ANY of the little things you love that make you YOU even if they don't all seem to go together. They are who you are and they are a part of who you will become. I am trying more and more everyday to embrace what I love and to share it with the world and you should too! Now if I could find a way to do this while sitting in the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca or Granada or Madrid or Valencia...wow...what an amazing life that would be :)

BIG dreams and all the love I have
Katie

Living by a Nightlight
i wish i could climb
up onto a star and swing
  quiet and simple
        and raining mystic confetti
        where the wind
        is slow and cold on
  my lips
        and the clouds that
     swell around me
           blanket
     the world in its sincerity.

i  wish i could live in
a dream
     where reality is smeared
  and thick between my
     f i n g e r:p a i n t

give me a blank canvas
      dark and new
and i'll punch holes in it
so the light can drip through
  and i can start
         over.

nails, scissors, and bobby pins

I had a few precious hours off this morning to sleep in and run some errands! Hooray! I desperately needed to go to the bank which is incidentally very close to a drug store and a nail salon...haha! How convenient! Time off work generally means I'm out spending money, which is why I don't mind working so much, and today was no exception. As of today I have worked eight days in a row and I have five more to go before I get a day off so I decided I could treat myself a little.

At the drug store i got these...
...some cuticle scissors! I dont intend on using them for my cuticles...I'll leave that to the professionals less i gouge myself! Instead I bought them for some much needed eyebrow trimming. Hooray! Check out Kandee Johnson's AWESOME video on how to groom your own eyebrows here.

I also got these...
..."roller pins" or, for me, the only bobby pins that will actually hold my hair in place. Im very excited about these as I have very straight hair and a TON of it! Now I can wear a flower in my hair at work (its required, isn't that super?) with a lot more ease. Pretty excited to use them tonight. It's the little things in life that make my day, haha!

...and got my nails did!

This is an awesome gel polish by opi that lasts two weeks with out chipping! It feels more rubbery than normal polish and comes off in a big flexible sheet when you take it off.  You have to have it done in a salon because it has to have UV light to set up (unless of course you own a UV lamp). I love this stuff especially because I work in a restaurant. It really stands up to all the water and abrasive stuff I encounter everyday. The color is a little more pinky than it looks here. I'm very into these super pale pastels that are popular this spring! I wanted a lavender but they didn't have one.  Boo! This pink is awfully pretty and girly though and it makes my half a day off all the more indulgent.

Find a salon near you and go get a gel manicure! Its awesome, it lasts way longer than a normal manicure and it'll make you feel pretty. Hope everyone has a b-e-a-u-tiful day!

looooooooooooove,

Favorite product time!

I love products! There's nothing more exciting than wandering the makeup aisles at target or a great department store makeup haul! Getting everything home opening it up and trying it for the first time...I just love it! As most of you know I'm a "Mary-Kay" representative and while I do LOVE many of their products I just can't help trying a new product or makeup line whenever I can. Product whore, makeup addict, whatever you wanna call it, that's me!

That being said, there are a number of products I have become completely loyal to. It's fun to try a new eye-shadow or liner but experimenting with a new foundation or concealer can be so frustrating! Here's what I use almost everyday and would recommend to any of you!

This moisturizer fights fine lines and wrinkles while it moisturizes. It is super light weight and absorbs fast. My skin feels and looks fantastic every time I use it! It also improves skins tone and texture over time...i've seen it work! Especially on "mature skin."
Check out my mary-kay website to get some or contact your maky-kay lady.  This stuff is awesome!

This little pot has three awesome things: 1 a thick creamy concealer to cover blemishes and redness, 2 a darker thinner concealer for under-eye, and 3 a translucent powder in the bottom to set all the beautiful concealing you've done! The thick concealer is AMAZING for covering any redness anywhere. Its thick enough that you don't have to put a ton on and it blends beautifully and stays put without looking cakey! The under-eye concealer is good too. I liked it while it lasted but I will say that I ran out of it MUCH faster than the thicker one...probably my only complaint.

I am a liquid foundation kind of girl. This is Mary-Kay's newest foundation and I have to say maybe my favorite product of all time! It covers and blends beautifully without having to cake it on. The colors are easy to match and this foundation leaves your skin looking glowy and fabulous! It's not shimmery or glittery, don't worry! It moisturizes and fights signs of aging while you wear it. BONUS! For those of you with oily skin this foundation also comes in a matte finish but you just wont get the glowy fabulousness.

Mary-Kay Cream Highlighter
I know there are a lot of awesome cream highlighters out there (shell by Mac, for example, is a very popular one) but being "a mark-kay lady" I had access to this one before it came out to the general public last summer. It was a seasonal item and so is no longer available, sadly, but I do want to express how I love a good cream highlighter wherever you can get it. When looking for a cream highlighter make sure to get with with a satiny finish not a super sparkly one. This one glides on and picks up JUST the right amount of light. I use it every day!

I would like to take this time to make a quick disclaimer: I did NOT intend for this post to be all about Mary-Kay! Nor was it meant to boost my sales as a Mary-Kay consultant! I didn't even realize how many MK products I use and love every day :)

This comes in two shades, cranberry, a dark rich purply red, or sheer bliss (SHOWN). I use sheer bliss and I suspect that this color would look good on just about everybody save the very dark skinned. Like most all of their other products it blends beautifully and never gives that tacky "rouged" look. Just a pretty, natural flush. For those of us dry skinned ladies, especially in the winter, this blush is the best!

To put on top of the sheer bliss cream blush to lock it in place and for a little extra color when needed. This, again, is a color that looks good on just about everyone...my fair skinned blonde cousin and I both use and love this color. Stays put too!

I picked this up at the store the other day just hoping for a cheap bronzer that "would do." HA! Like almost every other e.l.f. products I have picked up I was more than impressed. Most bronzers I've tried are too dark, or too shimmery, don't blend well, or end up making my face look dirty. This stuff does none of the above. It isn't matte, there is some shimmer to it, but it's a great product to buff all over the face to give a little extra summery glow. Not a contouring bronzer, just great to use every day for a little touch of summer.

and lastly my newest and most favorite product....
My wonderful boyfriend got me this for Valentine's day last week and I have used it every day since. IT IS AWESOME! There are 30 gorgeous eye-shadows, 5 lip glosses, 5 lipsticks, an eyeliner, a lip-liner, 4 blushes, a highlighting powder, a translucent powder, a bronzer, a mascara, and 5 applicator/brushes. The eye-shadows are just spectacular! They blend, they are pigmented, they STAY PUT longer than any other brand I have tried and the colors are so so so pretty! I have done a different look with them every day and hope to put some of them up here soon. I definitely recommend this one!

So thats it, guys! Those are some of my favorite products right now. I will always continue to experiment and play but I think these are staples I will come back to for a long time.

What are your favorite products? I can't wait to try them!

love love love, Katie

Welcome note and what beauty means to me

Welcome to my little corner of the beauty universe!

I've been wanting to start this blog for a while now to share my thoughts on all things beauty and I'm very excited to get it up and running! It's very possible that next time you visit my blog will look completely different...my moods tend to shift frequently and I suspect it will take some time for me to find a layout that suits me and my blog best. That will be the fun of it! What mood will she be in today? Haha! Well I hope you can find my indecisiveness entertaining anyway :) I hope you all enjoy my ideas, thoughts, pictures, and beauty inspirations and I hope that you participate in the conversation with me! Comment, comment, comment! Do you agree? Disagree? Think I'm a lunatic or a genius? I'd love to hear it all! Beauty means SO MANY THINGS and I hope to hit on all of them.

What does Beauty mean anyway? Merriam-Webster defines beauty as "the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit." I think that is actually a fantastic way of describing it! Beauty is putting our best foot forward in the world...it is perfectly coiffed hair, expertly blended makeup, a stylish wardrobe and manicured nails but isn't beauty also, and maybe more importantly, a genuine smile? a kind gesture? an open heart?

I hope by exploring the things that make us beautiful we can improve ourselves together, inside and out.

Here's to new makeup, hair, nails, style, skincare, health, and inner beauty techniques!

with love,
Katie
